I feel like I'm breathing a sigh of relief at finishing this one. It's been a long time in the making and I've made three of these now! I made the first quilt and started writing the pattern back in ...
.... 2014. It was made with Zen Chic's Sphere fabric and I really love it.
Then life and other projects got in the way so I never sat down and finished it. It stayed on my to-do-list forever and then last year I decided I wanted to finish it.
The first thing I thought about was the fabric because by that time you couldn't get Sphere anymore. I decided to make it scrappy so you could use any fabrics and pull from your stash if you wanted. The next thing I realized as I was measuring it out was that my original quilt was a wonky size, 56 x 84, skinny and long and just not quite right. So I added another column of lanterns and made up my scrappy version.
I really love how it turned out and it is nice and big at 70" x 84". However, when quilting it, it occurred to me that a lot of people don't like to make quilts as big as I make them. I have big guys in the house, so I tend to make my quilts pretty large so they can snuggle up in them. Anyway, I decided to calculate for a throw size, too, so instructions are also included in the pattern for a 56" x 63" size quilt.
One of my lovely quilting friends, Annie Cook, agreed to test the pattern for me and made a pretty girly version and added some white sashing. It turned out really pretty! She does longarm quilting, by the way, if you're looking for someone. @aecquilts on Instagram.
And finally, I had gotten a bundle of Lavish by Katarina Roccella for Art Galley Fabrics and wanted to do a version where the lights in the lanterns were all different colors rather than just the yellow. At this time, I only have the top done and haven't put it together and quilted it but you get the gist. I think it turned out so pretty. Can't wait to finish it but unfortunately, I have a couple projects I have to finish before I can get back to this beauty. So while I've finished the pattern, Paper Lanterns will stay on my to-do-list a while longer...
Paper Lanterns Quilt pattern is now available on Etsy & Craftsy in downloadable PDF form and will soon be available in paper form as well. If you make one, I'd love to see it! Use #paperlanternsquilt tag on social media.
